Friday Random Ten

Kate Bush

Every week I consider doing a musical audit a la Norbizness, and every week I realize that my shameless rating of Waterloo as a 10 out of 10 will get me mocked mercilessly. Frankly, my fragile ego simply cannot take the criticism. And considering that I was happily singing along to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald yesterday, I think my fears are quite founded.

So, I humbly offer you my unrated Friday Random Ten, Lake Gitche Gumee edition:

  1. Love You More Than Life - Neutral Milk Hotel
  2. I Know What Boys Like - The Waitresses
  3. Sister I'm a Poet - Colin Meloy
  4. Red Right Hand - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
  5. This is Not a Love Song - PIL
  6. Police & Thieves - Junior Murvin
  7. Lost in the Plot - The Dears
  8. Jason Lee - All Girl Summer Fun Band
  9. Western Skies (accoustic) - Lazyboy w/Roddy Frame
  10. Jig of Life - Kate Bush

Leave your lists (and ratings, should you choose) in the comments.

Annamaria: Sometimes it's best to play down to expectations and spread the high rating out to other songs. I often find that my favorite songs get lower ratings, because I can objectively gauge that they are not for mass consumption. Here's my list, with less variety because it's off my work jukebox:

1. Europe Endless (Kraftwerk)
2. Flesh Number One (Robyn Hitchcock)
3. Substitute (Ramones + Pete Townsend)
4. Drivin' (The Kinks)
5. The Mighty Quinn (THe Hollies)
6. Suicide Scherzo (Wendy Carlos)
7. Everyday I Write the Book (Elvis Costello + the Attractions)
8. Holiday Song (The Pixies)
9. Perpetual Change (Yes)
10. Everybody's Happy Nowadays (Buzzcocks)

Dang it! When I heard it this morning I thought, "Don't reckon anyone else will have Willie Nelson..."
norbizness always brings some tight stuff, too. Interesting mix. That must be a heck of a jukebox!
Here we go:
1)Lauryn Hill - Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (song, not whole album)
2)John Fahey - Yellow Princess
3)Willie Nelson - The Ghost
4)Lee Ritenour - Hero
5)Frank Sinatra - I've Got a Crush on You
6)Nanci Griffith - Three Flights Up
7)Eagles - Hotel California
8)Crosby, Stills & Nash - Suite Judy Blue Eyes
9) Smalltown Poets - There is Only You
10)Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
**Special Treat** the 15th song to play this morning was Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. This is a wonderful guitar journey through George Clinton's haze. Still amazing 30 years later.
Annamarie - I played the video of Coin Operated Boy yesterday (by choice) and it doesn't quite go with the lyrics, does it?

Willie Nelson has easily the best line in that otherwise godawful new Dukes of Hazzard movie:

"What happens when you give a lawyer viagra? He gets taller."

Oh, and am I the only one who really wants to hear his cover of "The Harder They Come"?

Anyhow...

1) Keren Ann - Seventeen
2) Nouvelle Vague - Guns Of Brixton
3) M. Ward - Fuel For Fire
4) Paul Simon - April Come She Will
5) Dressy Bessy - Who'd Stop The Rain
6) Suburban Kids With Biblical Names -Trumpets And Violins
7) Mississippi John Hurt - Louis Collins
8) The Thermals - God And Country
9) Sage Francis - Runaways
10) The Gun Club - Sex Beat
