I'm still annoyed that I can't blog at work anymore. I do my best thinking when I'm pretending to be working! I'll do my best to write at work and blog from home, but I trust you'll all forgive me if I slack a bit. After all, I've been slacking for months now and you all still love me, right?
I'm really enjoying this MyPlaylist thingy...though the site is slower than molasses at times. And apparently I have strange taste in music since I can't find half the songs on my FRT, so I have to upload them to the site. But it's fun to think that people are listening along with me, singing along just as poorly to Woody Guthrie.

Friday Random Ten: Long Weekend Edition
I know I just got back to work from a glorious week off, but I really need this long weekend. What I don't need is my white coworkers wondering why we get Martin Luther King day off work, but not President's Day. I've finally started asking them these two questions:
1.) Name one, just one, thing that Dr. King did to make this country a better place.
2.) Name one, just one, thing that James K. Polk did to make this country a better place.
If I get more than a vacant stare at question number two, I will deign to engage the speaker in conversation about the merits of treating Dr. King's birthday as a holiday. Because, it's not like we don't live in the blackest city in America or anything.

Friday Random Ten: Back to Work Edition

Hey, it's Friday! My first week back at work since the holiday has been really fucking boring. Somehow, I was elected to the position of "hey-we're-about-to-undergo-a-quality-audit-and-shouldn't-someone-make-sure-we-don't-fail" task force. Yes, I am the task force. I've been putting little labels on practically every non-moving object in the office so that we are not in violation of these completely bullshit corporate information standards, and going through co-worker's files and emails to remind them to purge everything in accordance with said bullshit corporate information standards, in the event that Major American Automotive Corporation is sued and the documents that would spell our doom are somewhere in someone's filing cabinet tucked between a Chinese take-out menu and a quarterly revenue report from 1986.
By the way, neither the take-out menu nor the 21-year-old revenue report should be in that filing cabinet anyway.
Also, just because our corporate overlords have installed neo-Orwellian software on your email client that automatically deletes messages after six months doesn't mean that a.) you never have to purge emails on your own or b.) it is acceptable to simply print out said emails and keep them indefinitely.
Finally, clean your fucking desks for fuck's sake! Seriously, coffee stains are unsightly enough, but dirty dishes in the bottom of a desk drawer? I didn't think it possible to respect some of my coworkers less than I already did, but then I became the task force.
But, as I said above before I degenerated into can't-stop-bitching-about-work girl, it's Friday! And Friday means music. And music is good. Nearly as good as music is the news that we might be getting a dog! Mama G suddenly got the yen for a cute little doggie pet while in the hospital, and lo! a friend-of-a-friend of hers is moving and unable to take the little puppy to their new residence. So, Mama G is seriously considering taking in the little raggamuffin.
I just noticed that I have prefaced every reference to the dog with "little." though I have no idea what type of dog it is nor have I actually even seen it. Just wait, Mama G is going to pull up in her ginormous SUV* someday soon with a fucking rottweiler! And, as anyone who has ever met Mama G can attest, that's actually pretty appropriate!

Also hidden in about eighteen subfiles so that only a really ambitious snooper would realize I'm wasting precious server space on roughly 300 songs. I'm actually impressed by how random the work collection is; not sure what work-related activity required Grandmaster Flash, but I'm glad it's there.

When I picked up Rich from the airport last month, the first thing we did was put Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits in my car's CD player. I've already got more than enough reasons to hate the (post-Clash) British white boy raggae movement, but listening to the original version of this song makes me want to hunt down all the members of Ub40 and skin them alive. - Tyrone - My Morning Jacket.
Oh, this song. I was obsessed with the Erykah Badu original in college, and surprisingly, I don't hate this version. I was prepared to hate it, and was actually a little disappointed at how much I didn't hate it. It's a little karaoke-like in its faithfulness to the original, but it's still a little dirty and irreverant, so I'll over look that. - The Tain - The Decemberists
This song might actually be longer than the other nine songs on this list combined. I'm totally at a loss as to how to comment on this, there's just too much going on to discuss it in four sentences or less. I'll just say that when Colin Meloy sings, "She's a salty little pisser, with your cock in her kisser," I blush for him. - Don't Feel Like Dancing - The Scissor Sisters
Oh, the irony, it's killing me. Get it, it's a dance song, and it's called Don't Feel Like Dancing? If I didn't have a massive girl crush on Ana Matronic (our names are so similar--it's fate!), my head would hurt from all the eye-rolling. I'll forgive the title since the beat makes me want to shake my ass. ;) - I'm So Bored With the U.S.A. - The Clash

Friday Random Ten: Now with Commentary!
I haven't done a Friday Random Ten in months! In order to celebrate my triumphant return to rock snobbery, I've decided that from now on (or at least as long as I feel like doing this) I'm going to list the songs and comment on their general coolness, how much I like a particular lyric, or regale you with stories of my debauched youth and the part that song plays in my fall from innocence.
This is either the best idea I've ever had, or by far the worst.
1. Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
I had this song for like five months before I ever really paid attention to it, and then one day it just clicked. I think I listened to it on repeat for days before I finally got it out of my system. Now, after having avoided it for a few months, I think I'm back on the wagon. Damn, what a great song.
2. Enrique Iglesias' Mole - Clem Snide
Oh, Eef Barzelay; you're like my dream friend. I want to drink expensive imported beers and smoke American Spirit cigarettes with you while we discuss the social significance of the facial deformities of minor pop acts with creepy fathers. And while I might gently reprimand you for incorrectly placing the apostrophe after the last 's' as if our Latin friend's surname were a plural rather than singular noun, it's only because I want you to be the best person you can be, Eef. I rebuke because I love.
3. Yuri G - PJ Harvey
Only Polly Jean can make a paean to a Cosmonaut sound like the sexiest lesbian anthem you've ever heard.
4. Sweet Lord in Heaven - Doughty
How did we miss this during the Songs About Heroin thread? Doughty reminds me of Ted on Queer as Folk--so much cooler when tweaked out than sober. This song is redeemed only because it introduces the phrase "Cobain Sarcoma" into the common (okay, my) parlance as a euphemism for heroin addiction.
5. Mushaboom - Feist
I tried so hard to hate this song. Knowing that Feist inspired the creepy and awful Sloan song The Other Man makes me want to avoid her no matter how cute she is. But all of my defenses are worn down the moment she makes "Old dirt road" last for about seventeen beats. And the video is so adorable I can't even stand it.
6. The Concept - Teenage Fanclub
I shared with Gaby and Kerri this weekend my theory that 14 is the important year in a girl's musical development; our future coolness hinges on our ability to seek out good music at this delicate age. On my 14th birthday I used my Harmony House (remember them?) gift certificates to purchase three CDs: Fugazi's Steady Diet of Nothing, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub. If this was all you knew about me, you'd know enough.
7. Ballad of the Sin Eater - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Ted sings "And the French Foreign Legion / You know they did their best / But I never believed in T.E. Lawrence / So how the hell could I believe in Beau Geste, huh?" and Annamaria swoons. Every. Fucking. Time. I'm the most literate whore you'll ever know.
8. Bill Hicks - Hammell on Trial
I've heard exactly two Hammell on Trial songs (this and a cover of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues), and I love them both so much I'm terrified to find anything else by this guy--what if they aren't as brilliant? Someone go download a bunch of his songs and allay my fears, would you?
9. This Years Girl - Elvis Costello
Early in his career, Elvis Costello was often accused of extreme misogyny, a charge that I find ridiculous when listening to something like This Years Girl (et tu, E.C.? Can no one use an apostrophe correctly?!) compared to most of the unfettered woman-hating that passes as Top 40 these days. That said, there is something rather disturbing about the relish with which he delivers the line "you want her broken with her mouth wide open." I figure within the year, Mr. MacManus was firmly within the clutches of the insipid Bebe Buell, so he's been punished for this song enough.
10. Think (Let Tomorrow Bee) - Sebadoh
This is the most agonizingly painful song EVER. When I was 19 and my first college boyfriend that I didn't even like that much broke up with me (He broke up with me! He was madly in love with me for two years before I finally deigned to go out with him, and he broke up with me!), I listened to this song on a nonstop loop for nearly a week before my friends finally staged an intervention. I think they were concerned that if the break up didn't drive me to suicide, the song surely would.

Friday Random Ten
Damn, it’s been a busy week. Not only was I responsible for playing chauffeur to Oldest Brother and the family when they were in town (and constant shopping trips to Target only sound like fun in the abstract), but work has been a joy this week as well. Today is my manager’s last day, which is kind of bittersweet. I really like the guy, he’s been fun to work with and I know he appreciates me, which is nice. Of course, New Manager and I have a pretty good relationship as well, so I’m looking forward to working with her. I just hate change. I’m fairly recalcitrant, so it’s important that I have a good working relationship with management, otherwise I’m apt to tell them to fuck off and quit because the coffee wasn’t strong enough this morning. Luckily, both managers make a mean cup of joe.
Oh, and I haven’t even told you the best news! Today is Psycho’s last day! She turned in her two weeks notice last Monday, and has taken a job elsewhere. Apparently she decided that there is more honor in quitting than sticking around and getting fired. I’m not feeling bittersweet about this, just pure, unadulterated joy. Yeah, it will suck having to do both her job and mine next week while we wait for her replacement, but that is a price I am willing to pay if it means never having to see her again. I only hope that her new bosses have an even more lax attendance policy, otherwise I fear that Psycho will crawl back here and beg for her job back.
Did I mention that she turned in her notice and promptly missed two days of work? Yeah.
Anyway…it’s Friday! We’re having a party at work to celebrate our manager’s promotion and finally ridding ourselves of Psycho. High spirits all around. And even better than a party is the Friday Random Ten! Okay, it’s really not better than the party, but since y’all aren’t invited to that, this will have to do!

Friday Random Ten
Ah! I'm late again! I have a good excuse, though. See, I don't have to work today, so I only just woke up about ten minutes ago. Fabulous! :)
Oldest Brother and his family are in town from Boston. Niece A has proven herself a true Genovese--she's a little cardshark that managed to score $5.00 off my mom playing Texas Hold'em for nickles. Good girl! Nephew N, meanwhile, has become obsessed with the lake behind my parents' house, and is catching carp in a bucket as we speak. He's being good, though, and letting them go back to their mommies when he's done.
Today I'm driving the entire family up to beautiful Grand Blanc, Michigan to visit Favorite Brother and his family. Should be fun, although being around all of those kids is going to be trying on this childless girl.

Friday Random Ten
First, allow me to apologize for the light posting this week. End of month/end of quarter business and all that jazz. Work has been insane. Add to that the news that my manager, with whom I get along swimmingly, has just been promoted and will be leaving our office at the end of the month. That means breaking in a new manager--luckily, I know this person and she and I have a good working relationship already, which means that I can continue at work with the proper amount of slacking off without any major issues. Thank goodness for that! Can you imagine if I actually had to work at work? I would have to find a new job forthwith!
Oldest Brother is also coming for a visit next week, which should be interesting. He had the foresight to leave Michigan fifteen years ago, and has never looked back. He's an inspiration to us all! Particularly since his adopted state of Massachusetts has just announced plans to have near universal health care for all of its citizens. Hmmm...free health care, gay marriages, funny accents—Massachusetts is looking more and more like Canada everyday.
And while I’m using this time to talk about things that I should have dedicated entire posts to had I not been so busy this week, have you all heard about Russ Feingold? Mr. President-of-my-dreams has done what few Democrats these days have the spine to: announce his support of full marriage rights for all American citizens. I know, I know, lots of Democrats probably believe in marriage equality in private but I can't name another one who's actually dared state the obvious in public. Good on you, Russ! You make me proud to be a midwesterner, even if I have to live in Michigan.
Meanwhile, Democrats have decided to join the 20th century and are proposing a new and exciting program to decrease the number of abortions: comprehensive sex ed and access to birth control! Hey, what a great idea! I'm surprised no one has ever thought of this before! Perhaps Senator Feingold can nudge his party into the 21st Century by the midterm elections.
I won’t hold my breath.

Friday Random Ten
I hate busy weeks. Seriously, running at full staff now that Psycho is back at work should have meant a few days of slacking at the office, but I've been busy with random projects every day (stupid month-end!). I even had to put together a tutorial on Excel for my spreadsheet-challanged co-workers; it included helpful step-by-step instructions and handy screenprints and I still had people running into my office completely unable to figure out how to delete a fucking column. I told one co-worker to highlight the column and right click and she looked at my blankly--in all her years working with computers, she apparently never realized that there are two buttons on her mouse. I'm seriously considering posting a sign outside my office saying "IT Department" and demanding a raise.But at least it's Friday. Yay for Fridays! Two days of sleeping in and generally slacking await. And, of course, if it's Friday, that means it's time for the Friday Random Ten! Here's mine:

Friday Random Ten
So I'm still upset about the Project Runway finale. Stupid Chloe! I thought her collection was terrible--all that shiny fabric and puffy sleeves; it was like something straight out of Dynasty, only with less class. And I didn't think that was possible. She had a couple of decent pieces (see outfit on the right), but over all I thought it was tacky and unattractive.
I honestly didn't think Daniel was going to win, but I figured if he was going to lose Santino would be the winner. Say what you will about his dickish attitude and general inability to make any of his clothes fit an actual woman, the man is a fucking visionary. While Daniel creates beautiful and wearable clothes, Santino creates works of art. They may not appeal to everyone, but you can't deny that they are original and creative pieces. Stupid Chloe!Is it wrong that the last time I felt this completely out of touch with voters was when Bush was re-elected?
Anyway, since I am the only one that cares about this show at all, I'm just going to stop now and give you my Friday Random Ten. Hopefully that will cheer me up!

Friday Random Ten
That up there is the cover of the latest by Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merritt, and based on the cover alone, I cannot wait to buy this album. Although I'm still trying to decide if the new song "What a Fucking Lovely Day!" could possibly surpass Merritt's classic "How Fucking Romantic." We'll have to wait until March 14th to find out.
So, in honor of Stephin's upcoming release, here's my favorite Magnetic Fields song just for you: When My Boy Walks Down the Street (Funtime OK) And I swear my love of this song has nothing whatsoever to do with its placement in one my favorite Queer as Folk scenes--it's just a coincidence!

Friday Random Ten
I've noticed a bit of increased traffic from our new friends over at the cleverly named Clever Titles Are So Last Summer, and since the Friday Random Ten demands participation, I thought I'd give everyone a refresher on the rules:
- Fire up your favorite digital media player
- Set to "shuffle"
- List the first ten songs it plays. No skipping songs that are embarrassing, since that takes all the fun out of it.
- Post your FRT in the comments as well as your own blog if you are so inclined.
Here's my list, which unfortunately isn't very random--mostly indie rock, with a pinch of Prince to liven things up. Except, of course, it's Diamonds and Pearls which isn't very lively. In fact, I don't even like that song. Of the hundreds of Prince songs I own, why is that the only one that ever shows up on this thing?

Friday Random Ten
Sorry for running late this week. The training hell I wrote about two weeks ago continues, and my coworkers are still unable to navigate a simple website. Of course, some of my coworkers seem to have trouble breathing unaided, so I shouldn't be too surprised.
But, my work related frustration is boring, isn't it? The really important issue is this: how in the hell did I get two songs called Chewing Gum on my FRT?? And a grand total of four Bens (Folds, Lee, Kweller and Gibbard)!

Friday Random Ten
Do you hear that sound? It's a kind of dull thump followed by an exasperated sigh. That's the sound of my head repeatedly hitting my desk as I try to alleviate some of the stress caused by my co-workers today. My office is currently testing a new inventory system and for some reason I have been designated the office trainer. I have one week to make these people understand the mechanics of a drop down box, and frankly I'm not sure if I am going to make it. I'm fully expecting at some point to just scream "For fuck's sake, people! Just click on the goddamned box and pick a fucking option! Any option! I don't care!" Maybe I can frighten them into compliance, but I have a feeling all I am going to do is bring on my own heart attack at the tender age of 28. So, be patient with me, dear friends, because my stress has reached a critical level, and this is one of my only outlets to vent.
Of course, my mp3 collection must have noticed my fragile state, since it randomly generated some pretty poptastic songs for me to listen to today. If Sloan can't make me happy, not much will...

FRT: AG Hearts EC
Please excuse my light posting these past couple of weeks. I spent last week getting ready for my trip to LA, and spent this week catching up on work and sleep after LA. And I managed to get my right index finger mangled by my car door the other day. It's ugly and painful, and the massive amount of gauze and tape my doctor put on it is making it really difficult to type. The good news is that nothing is broken; the bad news is that the latex finger covering my doctor is forcing me to wear makes it look like I'm constantly ready to give someone a prostate exam.
I'm not sure what's up with my random ten this week, because it's not even remotely random--there are four Elvis Costello songs on here! Granted, three are covers, but a 40% EC list is excessive even for me. Also, I am including a link to the Eef Barzelay song that's #1 on my list...listen to the first verse and you'll understand why it's my new favorite song.
